Take QuizWe saw the ever-popular 2022 Shaw Classic take place over the weekend on August 13-14th in Loveland, Colorado. 15 of the top strongmen from around the world competed for a chance to be crowned king but it was Trey Mitchell who ended up victorious to mark back-to-back wins in this competition.
Let’s look at the results of the 2022 Shaw Classic below.
This year’s Shaw Classic came down to the wire as the man himself Brian Shaw was trying to take home the title of his namesake event. However, it was Canadian Strongman Trey Mitchell who once again reigned supreme as the champion which marks consecutive wins of this strongman event.
Below you will find the recap of the 8 events that the athletes competed in over the weekend.
The first event of the competition features the Hummer Tire Deadlift where the big men had to try to deadlift the most weight to win. It was Ukraine’s Oleskii Novikov who won in dramatic fashion by setting a New World Record of 549kg (1020lb). Novikov has had a great year after winning 2022 Europe’s Strongest Man and 2022 Giant’s Live Strongman Classic. Only one other athlete was able to break the 500kg mark when Gabriel Pena pulled 522kg.
In the second event, the strongmen had to throw 8 bags weighing in at 22-29 kg over a 15-foot bar for the fastest time with a one-minute cap. It was Trey Mitchell who blew away the competition with a time of 47.4 seconds. Brian Shaw was the only other athlete to complete all 8 bags. Below is the order in which they finished.
For the third event, the big guys had to carry a yoke that weighed 506 kg a distance of 60 feet in the fastest time, and if they couldn’t finish their score was based on distance. The up-and-comer, Mitchell Hooper ran away with this event while Janashia came in a close second. It should also be noted that Luke Stoltman withdrew from the competition at this time.
At the midway point in the competition, the athletes had to hoist the massive 110kg circus dumbbell above their heads and lock it out for the most reps within 75 seconds. Once again it was Novikov who showed his dominance in this event with 8 reps whereas the next closest was Trey Mitchell with 6 reps.
The first event of day 2 of the competition saw the Log Press take place but it had a different spin on the rules. The athletes could choose from a 172, 186, or 200 kg log. They had 90 seconds to perform as many reps as possible. The judges ranked the athletes based on the higher weight lifted rather than the number of reps.
Once again it was Trey Mitchell who outperformed the rest with two presses of the 200 kg log. Brain Shaw came in second with 2 reps of the 186 kg log. Unfortunately, Bobby Thompson sustained a hamstring injury and had to withdraw while attempting a 200kg lift.
With only 13 athletes remaining they were tasked with moving two implements. First, a 363 kg frame had to be carried a distance of 60 feet then an arm-over-arm pull of a 318 kg frame. Both implements had to be completed within a 75-second time cap.
This event saw some new faces rise to the top with Maxime Boudreault winning with a time of 24.29 seconds while Evan Singleton came in second with a time of 26. 32 seconds.
This was a huge event where athletes had to press a total of 839 kg for as many reps as possible within 90 seconds. It was the big man Brian Shaw who handily won with 8 reps. Mitchell hooper finished right behind him with an impressive 7 reps.
Last but not least was the ultimate strongman event, Atlas Stones. In this final event, the top two athletes Shaw and Mitchell were neck-in-neck being tied for first place. The athletes had to lift 5 stones that weighed between 159 to 204 kg and place them on raised platforms for the fastest time while having a 60-second time limit. It was Mitchell who was able to edge out Shaw to win the event and the whole competition by a mere 4 seconds!
