Take QuizThe 2022 BP British Classic Women’s Championships took place over the weekend on March 19th in Lochgelly, Scotland. There were some impressive lifts during the event, but Sophia Ellis stole the show after setting 6 records!
Even though Ellis came in third at the event, we thought it was only necessary to cover her record-breaking day.
This year’s event saw some tremendous performances, with Joy Nnamani taking the overall win. Nnamani competed in the 125 class and put up some big lifts of 363.7 lbs squat, 220.4lb bench press, and a 501.5 lbs deadlift for a total of 1,085.7 lbs!
Coming in second place, Bobbie Butters, also in the 125 lbs class, just missed the mark with a 407.8 lbs squat, 243.6 lbs bench, and a 396.8 lbs deadlift with a total of 1,048.3 lbs. If she brings up her deadlift, she will be tough to beat.
Rounding out the podium was Sophia Ellis in the 167 lbs class. Let’s have a look at her record-setting performance below.
Sohpia Ellis had an excellent performance where she broke 6 British records and recorded the heaviest deadlift in the history of women’s British powerlifting across all weight classes!
Ellis went 9 for 9 on the day; her lifts were as follows:
SQUAT
BENCH PRESS
DEADLIFT
TOTAL: 1,158.5 lbs (525.5kg) - British Total record in Classic and Equipped
Sophia Ellis is a British powerlifter that got her start in the competitive sport just a few years ago. According to her website, she grew up with a destructive eating disorder and suffered from depression. She turned to fitness and yoga to help with those issues. Ellis played football and Cricket and then got started competing in powerlifting in 2018.
Since then, Ellis has broken many records and has competed for Team Great Britain at the Bench Press World Championships in Tokyo. She currently holds over 14 national and international records.
Another aspect of Sophia Ellis that you don’t see much in strength sports is that she’s a vegan and has been for years. Ellis now offers coaching services for people who want to get stronger or improve their overall fitness.
