Electrolyte drinks become beneficial when sodium losses are high, such as during prolonged endurance exercise, heavy sweating, or illnesses that cause significant fluid loss (Tambalis, 2022).
However, it should be mentioned that drinking an electrolyte drink isn't necessarily bad for you. Plus, they generally taste good, which can encourage hydration.
What Is Hyponatremia?
Hyponatremia is a condition where blood sodium levels become dangerously low. It's often used as a selling point for electrolytes, but it is often exaggerated.
It occurs when someone drinks too much water in a short amount of time without consuming sodium. The excess water dilutes the sodium present in the blood, which mitigates its ability to support functions (Adrogué et al., 2022).
Severe hyponatremia can cause nausea, confusion, seizures, and swelling of the brain, making it a medical emergency.
