April 25, 2022
On April 25, 2022, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) issued a press release stating that Bogota, Colombia, will host the 2022 World Weightlifting Championships. However, as of now, the IWF hasn’t finalized the specific dates of the event.
The 2022 World Weightlifting Championships were originally slated to be held in Chongqing, China but China’s Weightlifting Association (CWA) withdrew from hosting the event. The CWA came to terms with the logistical nightmare of hosting the event, considering the recent outbreaks of Covid 19 coupled with the country’s strict quarantine and Covid 19 policies.
After China dropped out, the IWF gave member federations 15 days to submit a bid to host the event. USA Weightlifting submitted a bid to host the competition in Atlanta, Georgia, but it ultimately ended up going to Colombia.
The IWF hasn’t specified specific dates for the competition but said it would occur sometime between November 1 and December 31, 2022. Colombia was chosen after reviewing each country’s submission and a Q & A. The executive board of the IWF then selected Colombia after the majority went with the South American country via secret ballot.
This will be the first time in history that the World Weightlifting Championships will be held in Colombia. William Peña, the president of the Colombian Weightlifting Federation (CWF), said, “Sensational news. A recognition of a country that transforms lives through weightlifting. With articulated work and a lot of love we will make the best World Championships in history. Thank you, IWF, for trusting us.”
SET FOR SET congratulates Colombia for securing the 2022 World Weightlifting Championships. We’re looking forward to seeing what the CWF can pull off especially considering the short timeframe for planning and execution. We will keep you updated on upcoming details regarding dates and specifics.
